New supermarket has neighbors excited

Mary Ann Ferrese was one of the first customers to walk through the doors of the new Food Lion on Mooresville’s south side on Wednesday. And from the looks of it, she said she’d certainly return.
“I’ll be shopping here a lot,” said Ferrese, as she selected some apples in the produce section.
Ferrese was not alone. The turnout was heavy at the official opening of the 71,000-square-foot supermarket, the anchor tenant of the Rocky River Promenade shopping center at the corner of Shearers and Rocky River roads.
Even at 10 a.m., the aisles were packed and crowds milled about, excited about the first supermarket in the southernmost part of town.
The two-phase shopping center will include four other buildings which could accommodate other retailers or restaurants and two out parcels which could be used to house two additional buildings. The center is scheduled to be completed next year.
Patty Martin, who said she typically shops at the Food Lion on Main Street, said the Shearers Road location is “great, because we don’t have anything on this side of town. It’s the convenience.”
The store is also a little more “upscale” than the one on Main Street, she said.
Karen Peterson, corporate communications manager for Food Lion, said the new store is a prototype that features 800 new items not offered in some other Food Lions. Among those new items, said Peterson, are an extensive organic collection called “Nature’s Place,” an Angus beef program, and a number of other specialty foods.
“We’re really excited to have a store in that neighborhood in Mooresville,” she said. “It’s a great location for us.”
So far, the new store has made a big impression. Shoppers like Mary Jo Palmieri marveled at the building and its offerings. “It’s beautiful,” she said.
Others, like Howard Schweizer, said he’d traveled from across town to the store, despite the fact that he and his wife live just a mile from another Food Lion.
“It’s a grand opening and there are great deals,” he said. “We want to take advantage of that.”
